I really like the plan that you have developed. This is a very ambitious plan to get your school to invest in a new policy for eReaders. I do believe that it is wise to get support from your department heads as you attempt to change this policy. Will your librarian be checking the ten nooks out to students without eReaders for the year or just for a short duration? I’ll be interested to see how this works out.
The eReaders will be checked out similar to a regular book check out. Many of our students have eReaders. I hope this is the start of a 'Bring Your Own Device' program on our campus.
Great! We have a BYOT at our campus. It is the first year so the students are slowly bringing in more readers and iPads/tablets each week. Will ten eReaders be enough to cover the number of students who might need them for your sample group?
The ten readers are the start of a checkout program through the school library. Many of our students already own eReaders but they have not been able to really use them during the school day because of our current Acceptable Use Policy for electronics. I have collaborated on writing a new policy to allow the use of eReaders and it has been approved by the principal. Hopefully, we can add more electronic devices for next fall.
I am interested in the policy at your campus. Can you give me a link to the posted policy? I would also like to follow how BYOT develops at your campus. How are you following COPA guidelines on student access to certain sites if the students can connect their personal devices to the internet and/or 4G? These are questions we are struggling with and your input would be greatly appreciated.
Sure! I'll email it to you. The students use our network rather than their data plans. That puts them under our filters to protect them while they use the devices at school. They can't use 3/4G. They have to sign into our network which is part of our AUP. Our system was upgraded this year throughout our campuses to cope with the increased usage. It seems to be working pretty well. By using our networks, their data plans aren't hit either.
I am encouraged to see the collaboration between Jennifer and you. My district has a general AUP. The link is http://www.desotoisd.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=cNAw5s6axJg%3D&tabid=450&mid=1234. Hopefully this may be of some use to you. I am currently on the districts Technology Committee. I do not know if we will address the AUP. If we do, I will share any insight.
I am part of a district technology leadership committee and I seem to recall reviewing a draft AUP for eReaders and other mobile devices last spring. I will look when I am at work tomorrow and see if I can find it and I will email it to you along with the policy my school developed for our iPad program. I have not looked at either of them in almost a year, so I cannot really remember what is in them but they might be helpful.
I am very interested in your action research plan. My supervisor, the school principal, said that we will most likely be needing an eReaders policy very soon. We have already had students begin bringing their eReaders to school to read their library books on. EReaders are becoming very popular technology devices and I think it is important that we embrace the new technology. It is also very important that we have a policy for eReaders so that the school is not held liable for broken or stolen devices and so that the students know the proper and expected uses of eReaders at school.
